There you can get updates and some intresting things regarding dentistry.

How to Keep Your Patients Happy By Staying on the Cutting Edge of Dental Care:

There’s no debating the fact that few people view a trip to dentist as something that is fun or exciting. Instead, most clients see a visit to the dentist as a chore, and many will put off going as long as possible. While we can’t promise that we can make your patients absolutely thrilled to be sitting in your operating chair, keeping up with some of the cutting edge technology trends in dentistry can make procedures a little more tolerable for your patients and maybe even add some excitement to your day.

Sedation: One of the newest trends in dental surgery is the practice of Sedation. The traditional method of pain control during procedures is the use of a local anesthetic but this method doesn’t do much for patients who are terrified of the dentist. By allowing patients the option of being completely asleep while they are operated on, they don’t have to be aware of what is being done to them or watch as the “scary looking” tools head towards their mouth. This can make squeamish patients a little more willing to undergo dental surgery.

Dental Imaging Technology: Another popular trend is the use of Digital imaging technology in dental offices. These images aim to replace the old-fashioned x-ray with 3-D pictures showing exactly what is happening inside of the mouth. Not only can this help patients understand your diagnosis, but it can also be very useful in demonstrating the need for a procedure. The more a patient understands about their dental problems, the more likely they are to elect to fix them. Digital imaging can show patients a picture of what the outcome of their cosmetic dental procedure will look like. This can boost patient confidence in the procedure and increase the number of elective operations your practice receives.

Many dental professionals are very excited about the development of Raman spectroscopy for locating the very early stages of dental decay. Raman spectroscopy uses special lasers to detect early stages of decay easily and painlessly. What’s even better is that this technology can catch cavities before the need to be drilled and filled and instead allows patients to address the issue with a special fluoride mouthwash. This technology is still in the development stages, but keep an eye out for it in the coming months!

When all else fails, Keeping patients comfortable in your office can do wonders for keeping them happy. Temperpedic recently launched a line of overlays that are specially designed to fit dental chairs. These are an inexpensive way to add some serious comfort to your patients’ experience. Don’t underestimate the power of feeling comfortable at the dentist, this is probably the best way to keep patients coming back!

Swine Flu or the H1N1 Flu which is officially declared as the Pandemic is causing havoc all around the world, witht he death toll constantly rising and the number of people getting infected constantly on the rise and in a condition where the goverenment is helpless about the situation, we have to save/protect ourselves from this dreaded disease.

As i always Say “Prevention is Better than Cure” So better prevent than Suffer.

Here i am going to jot downw the most important and the essential steps to prevent contacting Swine Flu, by following these you can prevent yourself and your family from getting infected:

Avoid Crowded places: Avoid crowded places, as these are the palces where the virus is more prevelant. The Virus which can travel through our sneeze and then infect the other person makes crowded places a “Strict No No”

Wear a Face Mask: Wear a Facemask where ever you go, mainly in crowded places. If you cannot avoid visiting crowded places then you have to wear a facemask all the time. This is an effective way to prevent contacting Swine flu as it mostly infects from person to person throush aerosols in air which mostly are droplets from sneezes.

Wash your hands properly: Washing your hands after visiting some place is a must as we canbe carrying the virus on our hands which was resting on any surface which we might have touched, so Proper hand washing should be done to prevent the spread of Swine Flu.

Stay away from Flu patients: Stay away from people who you think have the symptoms regarding swine flu, it is better to be away from them be it your collegue or you life partner, it is better to stay away for the movement rather than to loose your life. Stay away from Sneezes/ Cough . .etc (Maintenance of a 3 to 6 foot perimeter around a coughing patient)

Avoid Direct Contact: It is better to avoid direct contact with people having Flu like symptoms, Even a handshake could transfer the virus. So better avoid Handshake, Hugging, Kissing. . etc

Get Tested as early as possible: Getting tested on the earliest onset of the symptoms is strongly recomended, as this could save your life. There are many Hospitals which are ready to treat you.

Be Isolated on the earliest onset of symptoms: On the earliest onset of Symptoms of Swineflu one whould be isolated from others, and try your best to avoid schools, colleges and workplace.

According to some scientists the use of dentures in patients is going be a thing of the past, replacing the artificial prosthesis are a group of cells which will be placed in the empty sockets where the teeth are missing and we can see growth of our own teeth within a span of few months even at the age of 50yrs.

Paul Sharpe, a specialist in the field of regenerative dentistry at the Dental Institute of King’s College, London, says the new procedure has distinct advantages over false teeth that require a metal post to be driven into the jaw before being capped with a porcelain or plastic tooth.

“The surgery today can be extensive and you need to have good solid bone in the jaw and that is a major problem for some people,” Professor Sharpe said.

The method could be used on far more patients because the ball of cells that grows into a tooth also produces bone that anchors to the jaw.

The choice of growing a new tooth is likely to appeal to patients. “Anyone who has lost teeth will tell you that, given the chance, they would rather have their own teeth than false ones,” said Prof Paul.

Procedure:

Doctors take stem cells from the patient. These are unique in their ability to form any of the tissues that make up the body. By carefully nurturing the stem cells in a laboratory, scientists can nudge the cells down a path that will make them grow into a tooth. After a couple of weeks, the ball of cells, known as a bud, is ready to be implanted. Tests reveal what type of tooth – for example, a molar or an incisor – the bud will form.

Using a local anesthetic, the tooth bud is inserted through a small incision into the gum. Within months, the cells will have matured into a fully-formed tooth, fused to the jawbone. As the tooth grows, it releases chemicals that encourage nerves and blood vessels to link up with it.

The most intresting part of this procedure is how the teeth are going be to distinguished from each other, they are saying that the molar and the incissor can be differentiated, How are the differentiated ???? is the big question.

Results:

These tests have been done on mice which have shown positive results, as the teeth have grown in weeks.

On this Prof. Paul says “There’s no reason why it shouldn’t work in humans, the principles are the same”

So this technology will bring a drastic change in the use of dentures where own teeth will be preferred much more than the artificial teeth.

Earlier it was the growth of organs in the lab, but now it the stem cell research is also helping the dentists by growing new teeth in the laboratory, which can be made according to our need i mean the dimensions and the size of the teeth can be made for our needs.

Researchers at the Forsyth Institute in Massachusetts have cultivated mature tooth crowns from pigs and they say it could revolutionise dentistry.

Researcher Doctor Pamela Yelick has been speaking to Tanya Nolan.

PAMELA YELICK: What we did is we used tried and true tissue engineering techniques that had been used successfully to generate other organs and we employed those techniques to generate teeth and that had been, was the first time such an effort had been achieved.

TANYA NOLAN: I understand one of the important breakthroughs in your research is discovering the existence of dental stem cells in pig molar tissue.

Can you explain the relevance of that?

PAMELA YELICK: The fact that the cells that we used to grow these tooth structures produced both dentin and enamel suggests that the two stem cell types that are required to form those two tissues were present in the cells that we started with.

And so that suggests that within this population of cells, these stem cells are present and we are currently investigating ways to enrich and characterise better these dental stem cells.

TANYA NOLAN: So is it just a matter of time before you are able to bio-engineer human teeth in the lab?

PAMELA YELICK: We very much hope so. I mean, this is a very beginning step towards the process of bio-engineering human teeth, but ultimately what we’re hoping is that we will be able to characterise non-human mammalian dental stem cells, use what we learn from these other systems to identify human dental stem cells, where we can find them and how we can least invasively obtain them, propagate them and use them to generate teeth in the jaw to replace a human lost or missing tooth.

TANYA NOLAN: So in what time frame do you envisage the use of tissue engineering to help in the repair of teeth or even the replacement of teeth?

PAMELA YELICK: Well we’re hoping that along the way we will be making findings that could be used to repair dentin or perhaps enamel in developing teeth.

We’re hoping within five years we will know how to generate whole tooth replacements and that within another ten or fifteen years we will actually be able to clinically use these teeth, therapeutically.

TANYA NOLAND: It sounds like that would revolutionise dentistry as we know it.

PAMELA YELICK: It would be fantastic. We’re very excited about the possibility and we are working very hard to make it work.

There are a lot of really good applications for children, for example, who are born without teeth or even jaws as well as for people who, somehow, are predispositioned to having poor oral health.

Source

I think this research will be really helpful for the future dentists like myself as it is going to take almost a decade to bring this technique into the market.

So keep looking for some more advancements in Dentistry which can change the way Dentistry is being done.
