FDA or US Food and Drug Administration has approved an Epinephrine nasal spray a first of its kind which can be used in emergency treatments for severe allergic reactions. This can be a great alternative to the traditional methods which involve using iv or im routes of administration. This is also a very fast acting option which can be potentially life saving and help us Dentists in our clinical dental practice.
The Epinephrine Nasal Spray was approved on August 9th, 2024 for use in Emergency treatment of Type 1 Allergic reactions, in adults and children weighing more than 30 kgs. The Nasal spray is a single dose use which is being developed by ARS Pharmaceuticals, making it a very beneficial in comparison to injectable form being used now, this is much faster and useful and can be used by any person without any medical knowledge.
A Study involving 175 adults was performed comparing the blood concentrations of Epinephrine following administration of the nasal spray and the injectable form. From the study it showed that the blood concentration of Nasal spray was similar to injectable form and also showed similar effect on heart rate and Blood pressure. The Epinephrine Nasal Spray has shown similar concentrations in children weighing more than 30kgs or 66 pounds, making it beneficial to use in all age groups.
The use of nasal spray can help in giving treatment for life threatening anaphylaxis without any delay due to the fact that it can be administered by anyone (not just healthcare professionals) without the need of training or patients fear of needles delaying its administration. The Nasal Spray can be termed as a breakthrough in Anaphylaxis treatment giving a needle free alternative saving many patients who need immediate attention. This needs to be incorporated in ER’s, Dental Clinics and other establishments and supported by Insurance companies as well to make it accessible and available whenever needed.
