That branch of dentistry and science pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function by the replacement of missing teeth and structures with artificial devices.

It is also defined as ” The science and art of providing suitable substitutes for the coronal portions of teeth or for one or more lost or missing natural teeth and their associated parts in order that function, appearance, comfort, and health of the patient may be restored. [ by ADA ]

In simple terms we can say that Prosthodontics is the art by which we can replace the missing oral structures( teeth, gingiva. . etc)  with artificial prosthesis

Prosthodontics is also known as Prosthetic Dentistry, Prosthodontia.

The Dental Prosthesis which are used in Prosthodontics to replace the missing teeth and oral structures are

  • Complete Dentures
  • Removable Partial dentures
  • Fixed Partial Dentures
  • Implants
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
