Dental Graduates in India are getting worried about the future of Dentistry and jobs in Dentistry in the near future. There is a very high increase in the scope of Dentistry all around the world, people are more aware now and more concerned about Oral health and have come to know the importance of a good smile in looking beautiful or professional. But the current scene in the market is both difficult and competitive for a new and upcoming dentist.
Earlier a Masters degree or MDS was a good career plan, where a Dentist can get settled in a college as a Senior Lecturer with fixed pay and might even go for consultations in the evening getting a decent pay from both. But it is not the case at present with huge number of MDS graduates passing out each year and lack of vacancies it has become difficult to an extent.
I have been asked many times what the future of Dentistry is going to be in India because of the huge number of Dental Graduates passing out every year and at the same time new dental colleges coming up rapidly all around India. I personally think that the ratio of Dentists to India will be constant as you know the rapid increase in population is equal to the increase in the number of Dental graduates in India. But with well established clinics having no problem in attracting patients, it is the new and upcoming Dental graduates who are facing problems with competing with established clinics and trying to get through with the high expenditures of setting up a clinic and maintaining it on a monthly basis.
In case you are going to set up a Dental clinic after college you have to follow many Business tactics which i have written a comprehensive post about – Tips and Tricks of Marketing to Improve your Dental Practice – Offline and Online
One thing to look at is that the concentration of Dentists and Dental clinics is mainly targeted at Urban population and when we go to the Rural places the Ratio of Dentists to population is very low and way below par. The most important part in the increasing the number of Dental Jobs in India because of the increase in the number of Dental Clinics and more importantly Dental clinic chains all around India. Dental chains and clinics are using good amount of advertising to look for new graduates to work in Dental clinics and this has made it difficult for an individual Dentist who has set up his or her own clinic to go up against these corporates.
Recently a Dental chain has also started conducting Campus interviews for Interns to recruit in their Dental clinics around the state, for example, we have seen that there are many job vacancies in Bangalore recently which are vacant and this shows that there is no decrease in the number of Jobs for Dental Students.

BDS doctor earn good money in india???
Varun says
As a BDS doctor you have the option to work in other clinics which is not much Paying, and if you open your own practice or clinic you can earn well from it once your practice is settled, but the main thing is having patience as it takes time for u settle down and gain confidence of patients.

Hi, iam AKSHAY , i stay in bangalore, i have completed my 12th, and sadly i didnt get seat for medical,
as we all know donation for medical is too heavy for a middleclass family, so i was planing to go with dentistry, so i have following doubts:
Do i have scope in dentistry?
is it good in india or abroad?
is orthodontics a good optin?
how can i work as a dentist in abroad?
please provide satisfactory suggestion,
Varun says
Hi Akshay,
There is a lot of scope in India as well as abroad for Dentistry, You can open your own clinic after doing BDS here or do MDS and open a clinic as well as work in some college as staff. You can also go abroad but in most of the countries our degree is not accepted and we have to clear entrance exams and in most countries take up a course like DDS to make us eligible to practice in other countries.
namrata says
hi varun,
is there scope of bds in gujarat as i am getting admission in bds as well as bams….so please tell me which is better to do n which gives more salary?

Dentistry in India has off late hit a rough patch..well people tell increase in population obviously will mean increase in demand for dentists. You cant sit in a village and earn in lakhs right?? everyone wishes for a good quality of life which u cant get in a village. Please talk to dentists settled in cities before joining this course..once u finish bds working in a private college will get you a pay of 10,000 to 15000 max…and after you finish post graduation around 18000-40000..

BDS is one of the worst degree in india . As tons of BDS graduate passing every year, there is hardly any scope for dentist. Moreover there is intense competition amongst dentists in urbun areas and one needs extremly good experience to earn money. Government is shit as it is just busy in approving fake dental colleges .There is hardly any jobs for freshers all over the india . One shouldn’t at any cost opt of BDS in india. It is the most rediculous degree course. I observed lot of my dentist friends who change their line either to MBA or to somethings else. Those who still want to continue with their degree are either or working for marely few thousand buks or opend their private clinic and waits hours for a single patient. BDS is complete shit.
Zobin says
Yes u r right my cousin bro is in the same situation
anjala says
Yes I agree with you, dentistry in fact has lost its charm…and ofcoarse its the dci and government responsible who have made lot of money by giving permission to useless colleges and is selling degree for money, sad news for proffession..
Akash says
How much A dentist can earn by year. .???
Varun says
It cannot be a specified amount, depends on where you are working or setting up your clinic.
Akhil says
Do not choose dentistry if you think your life is going to be smooth and you can earn in lakhs. Dentistry is not yet a bad option if you have already joined the course, there is no point in finding out the scope of the stream in India, it is PRETTY BAD. Earlier dentistry was a profession that brings you a lot of money, even now there are dentists who earn a lot in India, the first thing you have to keep in mind is “IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME” to get settled in life. Earning a life with BDS is difficult. And after you get your MDS it’s never easy to get a job, graduates from 2011 are jobless other than few consultations they get which is never a constant reliable source of income. Setting up your own clinic is the only option and it’s a huge investment. One has to be aware of all this while doing the course. The MDS scenario has changed, it’s clearly evident when you look at the decreasing demand and money for MDS seats. People say dentistry is one of the most spoiled profession in India which is true to an extent. Still one doesn’t have to loose hope, if you have patience you can start earning slowly, looking at short term it will be difficult. And the dentists are paid well in foreign countries but then it’s not easy to get through. They do accept our degrees and want you to do certain qualifying programs for you to meet their standards. This is little expensive and time consuming but the outcome is definitely excellent.

I am getting bds in manipal and comedk..should i spend money and get admitted to bds..or should i study bpt(physiotheraphy) at nioh/svnirtar which is a central govt. Institute..which has a good job scope in future..pls help quick
Varun says
Manipal is a good university, it depends on your passion, just analyze which you want to do and go ahead with it, both have equal opportunities in the future. All the Best :)

sir, i have been selected to study BDS in KIIMS medical collge BBSR, Odisha. I am recently persuing Chemistry hons 2nd yr in Govt college. Shall i opt for BDS for continue?? What are the job aspects and the salary??
plz reply
Akhil says
It’s not just the university or college you get your degree from what matters, a dentist passing out from a government college or the best university in the country have to face the same challenges as a dentist from a private college ,unlike the other degrees the percentage you score or the university you have studied are less likely to make changes to your job opportunities or salary. The scope of a stream cannot be assessed just by looking at the salary one gets after doing the course.Passion and focus does matter a lot .Best wishes
ARUN GELRA says
Similar to the engineers degree with no practical experience dentist from more than 90%pvt.dental college students pass out every year in such colleges no out door patients and student never did any thing practically
So dental doctors pass out by these colleges having only so pices degree
Very tragic situation where parents take education loan for such costly degrees and result is big zero
ARUN GELRA says
Better I complete your degree I suggest never join bds, you restrict yourself in one field dentist but by Bsc in any stream you can prepare for so many exams. Study is not easy in bds but even after 5 yrs course the result is 0
navya says
hi i am navya! i finished my 12th recently, i got BDS seat in telangana! i have some interest in becoming dental doctor! but the people around me are saying that dental field doesnt have any future in telangana! so i m in a dilemma now! and will their be good pay for a dentist or not? and shall i do the course or not?
Varun says
Frankly speaking what the people around you are saying is true, Dentistry is a good profession but settling down in it as a career is difficult now and will become more difficult at the time you come out. So think wisely and decide if you are ready for the struggle to settle down which is seen in any profession you can go for it.

My advise to all budding dentist or wanna be dentist is FOR GOD SAKE DONT JOIN DENTISTRY. There is simply no scope in dentistry…Dentistry is finished.I am a MDS and i am being offered 15,000 rs to work in a Dental College.
All you young, dynamic people.stay away from dentistry.

Alisha says

Ravi says
I have to tell the truth really dentistry has no future or scope in India sorry to say this but be careful better to choose any other field but dentistry clearly have no scope in India U ll earn only 10000 to 15000 a month if u set up a private clinic max of 20000 a month and in future it’s going to be worse than this
NILABHA SARKAR says

Dr dhireb says
It’s the bullshit if I hve done bds or Mds no jobs nothing dci n the goverment of india r making fools
Dr.Nithin says
The author’s motto is good, yes we need to educate the people but also need to stop these private colleges producing dentists like crazy. The DCI is corrupt so are the colleges with no infra structure. To top it all these colleges pay peanuts to the doctors. Please ask when was the last time a pay commission revision was done in any private college. Are the vacancies published and interviews are fair. No is the answer and we all know it. In the name of Deemed University these colleges do all bogus works. Lets not blame only the govt for not giving jobs let us help future generations by not taking this course and shutting these colleges run by private thugs. I am a Postgrad dentist with a good profile and experience writing this.
Varun says
Yes, that is what we are trying to say. There needs to be drastic changes in how the future of dental education and jobs for dentists is shaped.
Harsh aggarwal says
Varun sir, would a preference of a govt college or good private one makes much a difference in the pay after BDS ? Would it be better than 15-20k or not ? Should i opt for BAMS instead ?
Varun says
Govt College experience is always better when compared to private colleges, the pay varies depending on the Clinic you are working in it starts anywhere from 8k to 25k. I personally have no clue about BAMS so I cannot comment on it at this point of time.

Varun says
First of all learn how to speak Mr. Sanjay.
And secondly, if you would have read the post completely you would see that I have written the pros and cons of joining Dentistry. No profession is without a struggle unless you are born with a silver spoon, so stop complaining.
Akhil says
I completely agree to Mr Varun’s reply to Mr Sanjay’s comments. Not just dentistry is in a bad phase now, every profession for that matter is highly competitive and you can never succeed unless you are good enough to compete. I do not know much about other areas like BAMS but do not choose any courses thinking life’s easy if you choose this. An engineer would talk about their degree the same way few of our friends had spoken about BDS here. But that does not mean that all engineers are jobless. I have seen people from science degree holders to pilots struggling in their life. NOTHING IS EASY. I would still suggest my friends to opt BDS if you have a passion of being a dentist. Dentistry is not endangered, it’s just that too many graduates passing out and not even half of the population is aware of oral health. Things should get settled soon. Standardization of salary should happen not very late. I’d put and example of radiology here, in 1990s Radiology was a speciality which none wanted to do their masters(MD Radiology) in. Most of the PG seats were vacant. Things changed over time and today a radiology PG seat costs more than 2 crores. Specialists are paid exorbitantly. So you never know how things will change over time(this is for people underestimating their profession here). I am a dentist who worked in cancer research also without a masters. For those who didn’t know and wish to choose dentistry, it’s not just about 32 teeth. Its much more, those who love should never drop the idea thinking it has no scope and for those who think dentistry has no scope, nothing has scope then. I still say candidates may do some research and I also abide to the fact that currently in India, the scenario isn’t that pleasant, not just for dentists, for most of the professions.

How much can a mds periodontist and implantologist make per month?

future of bds
Varun says
Mind your words Sanjay, I guide people who are already into Dentistry. If you failed in it does not mean no one can make it big. Stop discouraging the people who are into it, I personally suggest people not to get into Dentistry after completing their 12th. But what about people who are into it, do you want them to get depressed about what they are going to face or want to prepare them for what is about to come and face it ??
Varun says
At the moment BDS and BPT are similar in terms of saturation. There are numerous BDS graduates coming out every year and the competition is ever increasing. It is difficult to say which course will be good for you in the long run. You need to be prepared to fight it out after competing your course is all I can say.
Akhilesh says
If a student get government BDS seat through NEET 2017, will he get government job after 5 years directly?
Varun says
It is not confirmed that you will be getting a government job directly after completing BDS, as you need to apply for the Government job and many criteria have to be met.
